After visiting Ghana and later completing an internship, Aimée Wallin is now the co-director of Ghana Food Movement, helping to lead the organization and its members in creating sustainable food systems.

The Swedish/Malian political foodie advocates for local eating, sustainable production methods and preservation of Black food cultures. Prior to joining Ghana Food Movement, Aimée studied political science for her undergraduate work in Sweden and for her master’s work in Denmark, she studied human security.

“It’s really the nexus of food, politics, environment. Somewhere in between there is where you’ll find me. That is where I am so passionate, “ she says about her journey into food.

During the episode, when asked who or what influenced her decision to mix food and politics, she shares, “My father works with conflict and security, that’s why I wanted to follow his footsteps. I have always been political in a sense that there are better ways we can live on this earth to be more empathic to other people and to our nature and understanding that we can’t do this me, me, me game. We need to take care of each other.”

Expanding the Work of Ghana Food Movement

Since its founding in 2019, Ghana Food Movement has continued to grow its network and engage foodprenuers, producers, farmers and more. Aimée shares that the nonprofit organization “realized that Ghana’s food system has so much potential and so much to offer to Ghanaians and to the world, but here are some very, very big challenges.”

As a co-director, Aimée’s latest project with Ghana Food Movement is helping to raise funds and oversee the opening of The Kitchen, the organization’s education hub, which is scheduled to open this fall.  The hub will be a center point for those in the network and community to come together to explore innovation, food solutions and innovation.

In addition, the hub will play an important role in engaging youth through culinary and hospitality skills as well as product development; an investment that will be vital to the future of the Ghanaian ecosystem.
