After attending an event in Charleston and noticing the absence of Black food trucks, Marcus Hammond wanted to do an event that would bring them all together.

Starting a food truck festival was the last thing on his mind when the Tennesee native moved to Charleston to play basketball in college years ago. The entrepreneur enjoys hosting various events that bring people together, especially when music is involved.

“I always wanted to do an event that everyone could come to, kids from 5 [years old] to their grandmothers and great-grandmothers could come out and everyone could be together and have a great time.”

In 2018 after attending an event and not seeing a lot of Black-owned food truck businesses, the vision for the festival became clear. But it would be three years before it would all come together.

This year, he is celebrating the first anniversary of the Black Food Truck Festival taking place November 19 – 20 with more than 40 food trucks participating and thousands expected to attend.

Listen to this episode to hear about who is going to be there, including musical artists, and how Marcus and his team are elevating the attendee experience of each festival.
